Congressman Steve Rothman, NJ, Endorses Obama

.The claws came out in the Hillary Clinton camp in the wake of a CNN youtube presidential debate among the Democratic candidates two nights ago.

Clinton called rival Sen. Barack Obama's willingness to sit down with government leaders who are enemies of the United States "irresponsible and naive."

But U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman disagrees. In fact, the New Jersey Congressman said when he watched that debate he finally decided he was going to support Obama for president, and today he fired off a press release enthusiastically endorsing Obama `08.

"Barack's appearance in the last debate confirmed for me what I've believed all along," said Rothman. "It's new thinking versus old thinking. This notion of Hillary Clinton's that we should continue down this path of not talking to our enemies is a policy that has proven to be disastrous to our country. These are not the views of someone who professes to be an agent of change."

That is what this race is going to be all about.

Congratulations! I just hope Obama will be more careful next time when he blasts his Washington buddies as 'insiders'.

Obama "the new face of America" (none / 0)

From the article:

Rothman said [Obama's] public opposition in 2002 to sending 160,000 U.S. troops
to Iraq gives him foreign policy cred that Clinton frankly lacks.

"I made the similar vote," the Congressman admitted of his 2002 thumbs up signal
authorizing President George W. Bush to use force in Iraq. But he added that he later
"declared it to be a mistake."

Clinton, meanwhile, dug in unaplogetically on her Iraq War authorization vote -- an
error, in Rothman's judgment.

"I think Barack Obama has a new way of thinking and the intellect that would present
to our people and to the world the new face of America," said the Congressman.

Re: Congressman Steve Rothman, NJ, Endorses Obama (none / 0)

From the same article:
Often mentioned as a likely candidate to run for higher office when U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg retires, Rothman now has an edge if the longshot Obama becomes the Democratic nominee. If the New York senator wins the presidential nomination, Clinton backers U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone and U.S. Rep. Bob Andrews would be in a better position to pursue the Senate seat.

Re: Congressman Steve Rothman, NJ, Endorses Obama (2.33 / 3)

I had to re-post this one for icebergslim.

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/Story ?id=3413377&page=2

Asked about his foreign policy credentials on ABC News' "Good Morning America" in January, Obama said his "experience in foreign policy is probably more diverse than most others in the field. I mean, I'm somebody who has actually lived overseas, somebody who has studied overseas. You know, I majored in international relations."

Obama is an idiot.

Guess what, I have lived overseas, too.  And Obama is not an idiot.  Can you get your keyboard fixed, soon, bebe?

That is the most nonsensensical thing I have ever heard. The republicans will be attacking each other in their primary as well as the democrats. Each side will have plenty of ammunition for the GE.

I THINK IT IS YOUR ATTEMPT TO STIFFLE DISENT AGAINST YOUR CANDIDATE.

Re: Congressman Steve Rothman, NJ, Endorses Obama (none / 0)

I was just saying your basis for "Obama is an idiot" doesn't suffice as a comprehensible arguement.  As for the "banning people" I've only recommended 3 people, but admins have done nothing.  The three people I think should be banned constantly post slanderous and hypocritical remarks left and right all day.  They clog the blog.  dem dem's objectiveness is obviously out the window with a majority, he couldn't even objectively show how I want 3 people banned, he had to spin it into a "I ban" Instead of a "I want banned" and "Everybody" instead of "3 people".

Come on.  Blogs are like underground media.  What's the point of blogging when you're going to constantly and solely write slanderous hypocritical blogs and comments?  That's what a couple of people do.  Do you think it is healthy or helps the blog at all?

Re: You're on HillaryIs44??!!! (none / 0)

I am pro-Hillary.  I support Hillary on all the sites.

Anyway, that's not the issue here. The issue is that Obama believes that because he MAJORED in International Relations and lived and studied aboard, this somehow, legitimizes him on the foreign policy front. His thinking is pure bullshit and just dumb.

Re: Congressman Steve Rothman, NJ, Endorses Obama (none / 0)

Thanks for your opinion.  Now how about some personal experience.

Going to England, England alone was eye opening.  The massive change in culture, government, laws, etc.  To think that that doesn't carry some weight is stupid.  I learned so much in a week in England, I would never trade that experience.  That alone made me plan to go visit other countries once I get older and have the financial capacity to manage it.

Re: Congressman Steve Rothman, NJ, Endorses Obama (none / 0)

Yes, it is experience and is extremely eye opening. But he is using this as way to sell himself on the foreign policy front and as a potential candidate for POTUS. Come on Jeremiah, if Hillary were to make this case, you would be all over her.

Re: Why I cannot support Hillary (none / 0)

The issue of residual force has and will come up on the debate on Iraq.

A new Democratic-leaning Washington think tank, the Center for a New American Security, released a paper last month that estimated the number of troops that might be required for a more limited U.S. mission in Iraq. While the policy proposal by James N. Miller and Shawn W. Brimley was not endorsed by any presidential candidate, it did capture aspects of the notions advanced by Clinton, and Biden. The CNAS paper suggested that an initial U.S. force of about 60,000 troops would be needed for an effective training mission, counterterrorism measures against al-Qaida, force protection and overall logistical support. While this would be a far cry from current Bush "surge" levels, it would also not fulfill the "bring the troops home now" mantra of antiwar activists.

The war would not end and american military troops would be in Iraq for at least another 5 years. This is Clinton's plan for Iraq with her mission for residual force . She would leave 60,000 troops in Iraq.

Re: Congressman Steve Rothman, NJ, Endorses Obama (none / 0)

While living abroad alone is not going to prepare you to be an expert on foreign affairs, it sure helps. If I did not move to India as a kid for a while, I probably would not have had a network of friends and access to certain circles which would helped me sniff out BS coming from DC regarding the middle east. And AQ Khan was not exactly a secret to people over in India. It came as this surprise bombshell over here.

If one has the resources, one must make an effort to travel to another country.

Re: good point (3.00 / 0)

Chris mathews pounded Hillary's congressional supporter today on hardball on her AUF VOTE.

The simple question: Did you think that Bush was going to invade Iraq with his AUF proposal for passage? The congressman would not answer the question. Chris did his show today in Cedar Rapids IA.

Is their anybody on this diary who thought that Bush's request for the passage of the AUF was not going to lead to the invasion of Iraq?

Re: Congressman Steve Rothman, (none / 0)

Yup,there's a lot of C-Span clips of Hillary out there making speeches on the senate floor green lighting the removing of Saddam....I wouldn't be surprised if some 527 groups turns one of those clips into an ad and take it into the air in Iowa to discredit Hillary's anti-war credencial.

Hillary's biggest weakness is her inconsistency on Iraq...The things she was saying 4-5 years ago are completely different then what she's now saying...You have to attack her credibility and hit it  as hard as possible.

You see, Hillary don't want a nasty fight in the primary..They thought that they would be able to cruise in the primary easily and get ready for the GOP...This is why Hillary keep preaching this "we're all United against the GOP" crap....The problem with that is if Edwards or Obama buy this "united democrats B.S" rhetoric,Hillary wins hands down...This is why you have to attack her.

If anything, her negatives will spike up and this will be a huge problem for her.

Now that she attacked Obama,Obama can now freely go after her and still be able to point out she attacked first.
